Many men who have a bent penis need to seek for treatment. And if the reason for the curvature is Peyronie's disease, it is essential to perform surgery to correct the problem for resuming sexual life.
Usually, every surgical procedure raises questions related to the preparation and there are always many concerns about hospitalizations and anesthesia. That is why I am here to deal with this issue with you, who are going through this and need motivation to go forward in the pursuit of proper treatment.
This post is for you to get more information about the preparatory procedures, how it is done and the care that should be taken in the postoperative. I assure you it's not rocket science. With the correct guidelines, the chances of success can only increase.
How to prepare for the surgery of Peyronie's Disease
The secret to the good execution of any surgical procedure is planning. And in the case of Peyronie's Disease, also known as Acquired Curvature, it’s no different.
When diagnosed, you will be recommended to do the doppler ultrasound examination of the corpora cavernosa. If the technical term scares you, I'll explain what it is: it is an examination that will measure the functionality of your penis with an induced erection and high definition color ultrasound. On the screen, you will be able to see everything that goes inside your penis while the best surgical planning is done.
With the images, you can check the existence of fibrosis, whether they are superficial or deep, if there is an erection problem attached to it and you can also measure the vascularization of the penis, that is, how the blood is circulating inside of it.
All this evaluation is necessary for the doctor to have a detailed overview of the penile curvature and to program the step by step of the surgery. After that, it is just to make an appointment with your surgeon and wait for it.
It is worth remembering that it is important to use modern methods to heal Peyronie’s Disease, which will recover not only the sexual function, but also the stiffness, size and caliber of the penis, up until the possible limits of the nerves and urethra.
Patients who live in a different city where the surgery will be performed should set aside from 5 to 7 days for the entire procedure: one day for consultation and exams, one day for surgery and some other days for recovering and medical monitoring. Remember that there is no need to sleep in the hospital, which I will explain better now.
If you have already done the consultation and exams previously, this period may be reduced.
The surgery is scheduled, what is the next step?
The procedure does not require great preparations. As any surgery, it will be necessary to perform blood tests, urine and cardiological evaluation to avoid any delay in the recover. It is important to control glucose levels in order to avoid the risk of an infection or any other problems in the healing process. You will be advised about hygiene of the pubic area with antibacterial soap, which should be done for two days before surgery. Besides that, a fasting of eight hours, both solid and liquid foods, is requested.
With all that done just have a good night of sleep and relax, everything will be fine.
What happens on the day of surgery?
With the planning done and the previous care taken, it is time to straighten the penis and recover the caliber and size to the maximum limit allowed by the nerves and urethra.
The procedure to correct the curvature of Peyronie is not long, the surgery lasts between 2 and 3 hours, it is done only with sedation and local anesthesia. Usually the patient will be admitted to the hospital in the morning and, at the most, in the early afternoon will be discharged to go home.
The doctor and his or her team shave the pubic hair in the surgical center. So you do not have to worry about it, since they will take great care to avoid any risk of infection.
The recovery after straightening the penis
Like the whole procedure, the post-surgical in Peyronie's disease is not very complicated.
The return to the doctor happens on the same day of the surgery, in the afternoon. In this consultation, the success of the surgery will be evaluated and given the last guidelines so that the healing process starts in the best way.
Your penis will have a bandage and you will not need to remove it for the first five days. After this period, it must be changed daily for another five days. Because of the simplicity of it, it is not necessary that the patient return to the doctor for him to do the bandage. You can do it yourself in a few minutes.
There are three phases for the patient to return to normal life: between 7 and 10 days it is possible to get back to work (if it does not require physical effort), after 30 days physical activities can be resumed and after 45 or 60 days the patient can have sexual relation, after the medical evaluation is done.
The recovery process is even more simple because the surgical stitches are absorbable, preventing the patient from having any discomfort in the future or during intercourse. In about two months, they will all have come out naturally.
