PEYRONIE DISEASE PHASES

The evolution of Peyronie's disease occurs in an average time of 6 months. Throughout this period it should be constantly observed to apply the appropriate treatment to the stage in which it is.

Learn how to identify which these moments are and what to do in each case.

Phase 1: Inflammatory

The inflammatory phase is characterized by progressive penile curvature, which may be associated with pain during erections or in the sexual act. The appearance of plaques or nodules under the penile skin, whether palpable or not, it is also a common symptom of this phase.

Although the pains and discomforts caused, the disease is not yet at an advanced stage and can be treated by anti-inflammatory and analgesics. These medications will help to stabilize the pathology, which leads the patient to the second stage of the disease, the healing stage. The degree of curvature gained after this stage will help the doctor to determine wether if it is acceptable or if a surgery will be necessary for correction.

Clinical treatment with medications, together with the specialist's general guidelines and a follow-up of the case, may prevent the disease from get worse. Early diagnosis is important because the treatment is started at this stage and it might increase the chances of cure.

Stage 2: Fibrosis or cicatrization

In the fibrosis phase, also known as cicatrization, the plaque is already present and the penile deformity is defined and stable. For this reason, clinical treatments are no longer efficient or necessary.

Most often the scar tissue is found in the distal region of the penis, causing the curvature up, down or to the sides. If the stabilized curvature is greater than 30 degrees or disrupts sexual intercourse, performing a surgery can be recommended to reverse the case.
